NRJ Mobile: Revolutionising payment methods
For the first time ever a mobile SIM card is also a secure bank card
We are on the brink of a real revolution: from November 2006, Groupe Crédit Mutuel-CIC and NRJ Mobile customers will be able to pay for local purchases using their mobile phone -
a contactless and fully secure operation.
The contactless pilot payment scheme brings together seven partner companies (Crédit Mutuel-CIC, Gemalto, Inside Contactless, MasterCard, NRJ Mobile, Sagem Communication and Sagem Monétel) who are together embracing this challenge.
Purchasing a cinema ticket, doing the Saturday shop, paying for a meal out... such everyday activities as these will soon have consumers reaching not for their bank card, but for their mobile.
It is true that today mobile phones outnumber bank cards. What the consortium members are proposing with this scheme is to bring the two together by equipping handsets with bank card functionality. Their solution offers the simplicity of contactless payment methods, the flexibility and security of the bank card, and the limitless potential of the mobile phone.
Unrivalled levels of security and convenience for the customer
With the Crédit Mutuel-CIC payment solution, the customer touches their phone to the reader. This triggers an audible and visual signal, confirming that the phone has been recognised. The customer is asked to enter a PIN into his phone key pad, where the transaction amount is displayed. The customer then touches his phone to the reader again to confirm payment.
This solution offers customers security and peace-of-mind, and can be used in transactions totalling any
amount.
The payment solution offered by Groupe Crédit Mutuel-CIC and its partners is THE
solution because:
• It will be an internationally recognised bank card
The partners involved in this pilot have in effect preloaded a secure bank card
directly onto the mobile's SIM card. This electronic chip works using the
EMV 1 protocol, adopted worldwide in order to offer users, retailers and banks maximum security.
• Transactions are protected by PIN entry
Transactions are executed in the same way as if the user were paying by bank card. They rely on a secure and proven protocol:
- use of a PIN to authorise payment;
- authentication of the cardholder;
- final authorisation request.
• Simple, fast and secure contactless payment
SIM cards in NFC-capable handsets are supported by MasterCard PayPassTM
contactless payment technology. This payment card works using short radio waves to execute a fast, securetransaction.
Powered by NFC technology, the contactless payment method can operate at a very short distance (less than 5 cm) in order to avoid any interference and without having to access the mobile operator network. This means the only gesture needed is that made by the mobile phone holder, who moves their handset to the terminal.
• For both retailer and consumer,
it's no different from paying by card
The transaction is completed quickly and securely, the same as with
traditional card payments. Transactions are managed and billed in
exactly the same way. The only differences reside in the nature of the bank card and the absence of
any physical contact with the retailer's terminal.
A trial run to prove the system works
The payment solution from Groupe Crédit Mutuel-CIC, NRJ Mobile and partners
is already in operation.
In order to test how the system works and monitor public response, the scheme will be trialled in November 2006 in Strasbourg. It will involve 200 Crédit Mutuel Centre Est
Europe customers and around 50 retailers working in different sectors, in particular cinemas,
restaurants and larger stores.
